Why Living To 150 Might Soon Be A Reality

Aging is an inevitable aspect of the human experience. People are born, live, and intend to age in a graceful and healthy manner. While the human race has made strides to prolong life and longevity over the last several centuries—new advances are continuing to push the envelope of human existence.

While medical advances, improvements in nutrition, and a continuing wealth of knowledge have sought to enhance our lifestyles—revolutionary new advancements are continuing to expand our lifespan and existence.

The world’s oldest person to ever walk the earth was a woman by the name of Jeanne Calment who lived to be 122.

What if one day that humans could live to 150 and beyond?

Why Aging Occurs

Aging is considered the progressive accumulation of changes with time that are associated with or responsible for the ever-increasing susceptibility to disease and death which accompanies advancing age (1). Furthermore, the common denominator that underlies all modern theories of biological aging is change in molecular structure and hence function.

So what if there was a way to change this?

As we age our levels of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)—the essential molecule tasked with generating cell energy and maintaining DNA integrity—decreases over time. As a result, the reduction in NAD+ levels causes age-related diseases including cardiovascular problems, metabolic disorders, and even Alzheimer’s disease.

NAD+ levels naturally and gradually decline over time. Increasing NAD+ levels in the body is one way people can fight aging through restoring the body’s cellular function—which in turn can help to slow down the aging process.

Humans are able to replenish NAD levels through NAD biosynthesis from extracellular precursors. This includes nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) which serves as a precursor of intracellular NAD (2).

Why is NAD+ Important

NAD+ is a coenzyme that is involved in a number of biochemical reactions. Necessary for over 500 enzymatic reactions—NAD+ plays a critical role in biological processes such as metabolism, aging, cellular death, DNA repair, and gene expression.

As a critical mechanism for human health and longevity—NAD+ occurs naturally, but gradually decreases over time with aging. Furthermore, weakened NAD+ biosynthesis and accelerated NAD+ consumption can lead to dysfunction in multiple tissues (3).

Lower NAD+ levels can disturb biochemical processes resulting in a number of potential health issues ranging from diabetes to obesity. Cognitive decline can also be negatively impacted as a direct result of decreased NAD+ levels. NMN is a precursor that helps boost NAD+ levels while minimizing the effects of aging.

How NMN Works

Research has shown that NMN supplementation may be able to increase SIRT1 activity and reverse metabolic decline. Studies show NMN could be a critical tool for lowering the incidence of metabolic dysfunction and other harmful diseases.

Supplementing our bodies with NMN helps feed into NAD+ production, thereby providing cells with the needed energy critical for healthy aging. Maintaining high levels of NAD+ production also provides the body with the mechanisms needed for activating proteins that maintain the integrity of our DNA.

Some of the benefits of NMN include:

  • Promoting vascular health and blood flow
  • Increasing muscular strength and endurance
  • Lowering the potential risks of heart diseases
  • Decreasing the risks of obesity
  • Promoting DNA repair
  • Improving mitochondrial function

Think of NMN as a smaller component that acts as the raw material needed for the body to successfully produce NAD+. As one of the five main precursors of NAD+ in the body—NMN represents one of the final steps of NAD+ synthesis.

Providing the body with NAD+ directly can be a difficult undertaking, but consuming precursors such as NMN can help to increase the bioavailable levels of NAD+. NMN is more compact than NAD+—making it easier to efficiently absorb at a cellular level.

The Future of NMN

Researchers have only begun to scratch the surface of the potential of NMN. While we are becoming increasingly more aware of its anti-aging benefits—we believe NMN will provide an array of health benefits beyond anti-aging.

Perhaps one day humans will be able to push the boundaries of aging and live to 150 and beyond. Only time will tell, but we’re hopeful that NMN will be a tool to forever change how we age.
